Alyssa Quinn, 20-year-old college student, says nothing helps her reduce stress like taking fake engagement pictures with boys.

Finals week is a scary and stressful week on college campuses throughout the nation. It is a common sight to see nervous students frantically flipping through pages in the library or reviewing flash cards while they bustle to class.

“When I need to clear my mind I take pictures or give funky new hairstyles to my roommates,” Quinn said.

Luckily, there are many fun ways to reduce stress during the crazy time of finals week, a few of which are even doctor recommended.

Jim Davis, Medical Director at the Student Health and Wellness Center in Logan, Utah, says stress management is critical but avoiding stress can stop a student's progression.

“There is a healthy balance between stress and growth,” Davis said, “We could not grow, thrive or develop on any level without stress.”

That means as students, if success is expected, then there mush be some stress in every realm—athletics, emotions, physical characteristics, and test taking/anxiety.

Avoiding the stress of finals week for a college student means dropping out of school, so Davis strongly encourages students to just figure out what stress relieving techniques help them best manage, not avoid, stress.

One fun stress reliever used by many college students is partying, which Davis highly suggests, in certain contexts, because socializing, but not substance abuse at a party, has proven to be a positive way to reduce stress.

Kelsi Callister, freshman in elementary education at USU, loves joining in on her roommate five-minute dance parties that happen every hour on the hour in her apartment during intense times of stress.

Callister also says she loves to throw random, fake, surprise birthday parties and go for strolls through the cemetery when she needs to clear her mind.

“Dead people can't stress me out,” she said, “they are already dead so I can just walk around in peace.”

Several people use walking or exercise as a stress reduction method. Another common method is people watching/observing.

Ashley Ylst, junior in elementary education, prefers fish tanks to people.

“I like to watch the fish at Walmart,” Ylst said, “They are calming.”

While fish watching at Walmart may relieve stress for some, Dr. Davis suggests not shopping there or sanywhere as a stress management method.

Dr. Davis attended the American College Health meeting over the summer and said a recent study proved that shopping increases the risk to be in a high stress group by three times the normal amount.

In addition to shopping, prayer was another method that was surprisingly suggested as counter productive to relieving stress.

The study did suggest some protective factors for stress reduction, however, including sleeping, calling a parent, singing and playing an instrument.

Students really just need to learn what works for them individually though, Davis said.

“I personally go to my happy place,” he said. Davis likes to imagine digging his toes in the warm sand or he reflects on memories from his childhood.

Students can physically turn away from the source of stress by closing their eyes and just focusing on other visual images, Dr. Davis said.

Then return to the problem, he said, whether a homework question or life issue when the mind is clear.

“Stress is the salt of life,” he said, “Without stress, life would have no flavor.”

Sure, finals contribute to high stress levels, he said, but to a certain level the more stress one has, the more success there is potential for.

Generally as stress increases, accomplishments increase, until one hits the “point of burning out,” as Davis called it, then stress is counterproductive.

Everyone just needs to know how much stress they can handle before they burn out, Davis said.

In experimenting where an individual's burnout point is, students should practice the every day “best ways to avoid stress” as suggested by the Student Health and Wellness Center.

Some tricks include:

- Breathing exercises: take in a deep breath while sitting or lying down with arms and legs uncrossed. Push out as much air as possible. Repeat this process for at least 5 minutes daily

- Relaxation Therapy: visit the SHWC to learn more about this type of therapy.

- Exercise: move your body through a vast range of motion, stretching, running, shaking, whatever gets you moving.

- Banish bad thoughts: don't think about bad thoughts

- Replace bad thoughts with good ones: purposely think of something that makes you happy or proud when you have a negative thought. Memorize a poem or special thought to use and replace negative feelings.

Those tips are all important, Brian Laird, junior in mechanical engineering said, but everyone has something special they can do on their own.

“Juggling gets my mind off of my problems,” Laird said, “because it's rhythmic and distracts me from the troubles of school.”Sometimes there are lots of tasks to juggle in life; it's a balancing act, but Dr. Davis thinks the students at Utah State can handle finals week with a little use of some of the stress management techniques outlined.

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog. I'm so happy to start this journey with this blog. In the distant past, I've had several blogs that I used to pen down my thoughts about the the world, technology, science and anything interesting happening in my life. But I gave those up soon after.

Right now, I'm hoping to have a better chance on blogging with more life experiences and as well as more things to share. I hope to one day maybe have to migrate to a domain name of my own, and have my blog become famous one day.

Travelling has been an important part of my life for about two decades now. I've travelled virtually every part of the world, Asia, Europe, America, and so on. I look at myself as a seasoned traveller, and I have had many experiences around the world. Whenever I travel, I bring my latop with me, as I find it unrenounceable, especially with taking notes on the go. I like to take out my laptop, open it up with a nice hot cup of tea, and then just read the latest news from around the world, or just write down my thoughts as I sip on some good, coffee.

One thing that troubles me frequently is politics. Oftentimes, international policy discussions that happen at government levels seem remote and distant, but they have real effects on our lives. I hope to cove some of this in my site as well. On a lighter note, I'm pretty much into gadgets and I like to read, so I'm sure I will have some posts about those topics too. I'm reading a book about business right now, and I usually read a new book every few weeks. I find the change in perspective engaging and fresh, and I like how you can win new ideas from reading books.

I hope you'll find my blog an engaging read, and I look forward to going through this journey with all of you.
